Impact of the appeal
Funds donated by the public and matched by the government will be used to deliver humanitarian aid to those affected by recent violence in Myanmar, including the more than 620,000 people who have fled to Bangladesh.
Your donations will support life-saving aid such as the provision of shelter, clean water, sanitation, food, health care, psychological first aid and child protection.
UNHCR and partners have so far installed 2,127 latrines and 208 tube wells. This will give more than 106,000 people access to latrines and some 104,000 people access to safe water.
UNHCR is managing eight primary health centres, where approximately 55,000 refugees have received medical attention or trauma counselling.
Donations to the Australian Red Cross will provide more medicines for health clinics, staff for a 60 bed field hospital, increased delivery of water purification tablets to prevent children dying of diarrhoea, additional hygiene items for women and girls. The Red Cross is also creating safe spaces for women and girls, providing sexual and gender based violence related services as well as psychosocial support to those affected.
Australia’s support
Since 25 August 2017 when the violence in Rakhine State escalated, Australia has committed $30 million towards relief efforts. This funding is in addition to over $95 million that we have provided since 2013 to respond to humanitarian needs in Myanmar and for people displaced to Bangladesh.
Australian funding is helping to deliver essential services, to keep people safe, and to restore dignity to people affected by this crisis.
There are other Australian NGOs that are also working on the Myanmar – Bangladesh emergency. For more information, please visit the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) website.
