Background

Since 22 August 2024, heavy rainfall, combined with the release of water from upstream sources, has led to severe flooding in several districts of Bangladesh. A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified the downpours, significantly impacting the northeastern and southeastern regions of the country, as well as neighboring Indian states like Meghalaya and Tripura. The BMD and FFWC have reported substantial rainfall across these areas, with some locations recording over 180 mm in 03 days. This relentless rain, coupled with upstream water inflows, has caused major rivers such as the Surma-Kushiara, Manu, Khowai, and Feni to overflow, severely inundating low-lying districts including Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sylhet, Feni, Cumilla, Noakhali, Khagrachhari, Brahmanbaria, Chattogram, Lakshmipur, and Cox's Bazar.
