Bangladesh - Floods (DG ECHO, BMD, FFWC, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 08 July 2024)

  • Torrential rains and upstream flow resulted in the flooding of lower areas in 15 districts and left thousands of people stranded.
  • State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief indicated that around 2 million people in 15 districts were affected by the ongoing floods. The worst-affected districts are Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Rangpur, Jamalpur, Gaibandha, Feni, Rangamati, Bogra, Kurigram, Sirajganj, Lalmonirhat, Tangail and Cox’s Bazar.
  • The government has allocated 8,700 tons of rice, Tk31 million (EUR 250,000) in cash, 58,500 sacks of dry food, Tk 0.6 million for baby food, and Tk 0.6 million for fodder for floods-hit districts so far.
  • The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief called an inter-ministerial emergency meeting on 7 July.
  • DG ECHO funded disaster preparedness projects led by WFP and CARE activated Anticipatory Action and allocated EUR 450,000 to 10,068 affected families on 4 July. UN CERF also allocated USD 6.2 million as part of their Anticipatory Action triggers in the northwest (Jamuna Basin).
