UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
14 AUGUST 1989

1. FOLLOWING EXCESSIVE RAINFALL IN NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES FLASH FLOODS OCCURRED IN SYLHET DISTRICT. AFFECTED UPAZILAS ARE ZAKIGANJ, KANAIGHAT, BIANIBAZAR AND GOLAPGANG. MOST AFFECTED IS ZAKIGANJ UPAZILA WHERE BREAK OF EMBANKMENT CAUSED RUSH OF WATER FROM KUSHIARA RIVER.

2. 200,000 PEOPLE IN ABOVE MENTIONED UPAZILAS AFFECTED. SEED BEDS AND STANDING CROPS IN OVER 9,000 HA PARTIALLY AFFECTED.

3. THERE ALSO REPORTED FLASH FLOODS IN BANDARBAN DISTRICT, TIDAL SURGE IN COX'S BAZAR AND CHITTAGONG DISTRICTS.

4. GOVT UNDERTAKING RELIEF OPERATIONS. ALL RIVERS IN BRAHMAPUTRA, GANGES AND MEGHNA BASINS FLOWING BELOW DANGER LEVEL. UNDP/UNDRO RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE INDICATED SITUATION NOT ALARMING AND UNDER GOVERNMENT CONTROL.

5. UNDRO HAS NOT RECEIVED REQUEST TO LAUNCH AN APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.
