UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1

SITUATION

1. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE DHAKA REPORTS FLOODS CAUSED BY MONSOON RAINS IN GANGES BASIN NORTH-WESTERN BANGLADESH DISTRICT OF RAJSHAHI.

2. WATER ROSE SHARPLY LAST TWO WEEKS AND FLOODED 1600 SQ MILES AFFECTING 100,000 PEOPLE. 4 PERSONS WERE REPORTED KILLED AND 48,500 ACRES OF CROPS DAMAGED. GOVT FLOOD FORECASTING COMMITTEE ANTICIPATES POSSIBILITY SIMILAR FLUSH FLOOD IN LATE AUGUST.

3. HEALTH: LOCALIZED EPIDEMIC OF P. FALICIPARUM MALARIA CAUSED BY INCREASED TRANSMISSION OF MALARIA PARASITES COMING FROM INDIAN MEGHALAYAN REGION. SIX PERSONS REPORTED DEAD. WATER BORNE DISEASES (MAINLY DIARRHOEA) HAS SPREAD IN NORTH EASTERN PART OF COUNTRY IN WHICH 52,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED WITH 165 DEATHS.

NATIONAL RESPONSE

4. GOVT HAS INTENSIFIED RELIEF OPERATIONS. PRESENT GOVT FOOD STOCK SITUATION SATISFACTORY. EMERGENCY REMEDIAL MEASURES LIKE LOCAL SPRAYING, MASS DRUG ADMINISTRATION AND MEDICAL TREATMENT HAVE BROUGHT EMERGENCY UNDER CONTROL.

5. NO INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE HAS SO FAR BEEN REQUESTED.

1. UNDRO/UNDP REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS THAT GOVT HAS OPENDED TEMPORARY SHELTERS IN AFFECTED AREAS. FOOD AND EMERGENCY MEDICINES SUPPLIED. GOVT ALSO PROVIDING CASH GRANT AND MATERIALS FOR RECONSTRUCTION DAMAGED HOUSES. SITUATION RAPIDLY IMPROVING AS WATER RECEDES, AND FLOOD VICTIMS HAVE STARTED RETURNING HOME FROM SHELTERS.

2. THIS IS FINAL REPORT UNLESS SITUATION DETERIORATES.
