Situation Overview

On 25 November at around 5:15 p.m., a major fire erupted in the Bou Bazar area of the Korail slum, rapidly engulfing Block K, Barishal Potti, and Kumilla Potti. The blaze, reportedly triggered by a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) explosion, spread quickly due to the congested layout and flammable structures. Firefighters faced significant delays due to traffic congestion and narrow access routes. Nineteen units from the Fire Service and Civil Defence were deployed, and operations to control the fire continued until 10:30 p.m. The fire caused extensive damage, leaving thousands homeless. Many fled without belongings and have taken temporary refuge near Banani Lake, Khambar Bari field, and adjacent areas. Initial assessments estimate that about 2,664 families were affected.
