Bangladesh - Flash floods, update (DG ECHO, ECHO partners, BMD, MoDMR, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 29 August 2024)

  • According to Disaster Management Ministry, at least 31 casualties and 2 missing people have been reported and more than 5.8 million people are affected by flash floods induced by heavy rains and rush of water from upstream in eastern Bangladesh.
  • 1,227,554 families are trapped in floodwaters in 11 districts, with 73 upazilas (administrative divisions) almost completely submerged. At least 540,510 people and 39,531 cattle have taken shelter in 4,003 shelter centres. The most affected districts are Noakhali, Feni, Cumilla and Lakshmipur. More than 1 million people remain without electricity.
  • Rescue operations are still ongoing and insufficient assistance is being provided by the government and humanitarian partners via non food items, cooked and dry food and drinking water. 619 medical teams have been deployed. Relief materials could not reach many remote areas which remain inaccessible. Drinking water, medical assistance and food have been reported among the most urgent needs.
  • Water in the rivers is now below danger level but water is not expected to recede before at least one week, with risk of persistent waterlogging.
