Bangladesh – Flash Floods (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) , MoDMR, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 26 August 2024)

  • According to the Disaster Management Ministry, at least 20 casualties have been reported and more than 5.2 million affected by flash floods induced by heavy rains and rush of water from upstream in eastern Bangladesh. 1,047,029 people are trapped in floodwaters in 11 districts, with 77 upazilas almost completely submerged. At least 415,273 people have taken shelter in 3,654 shelter centres. The most affected districts are Noakhali, Feni and Cumilla with strong currents washing away parts of embankments. About 1.1 million still remain without electricity.
  • Rescue operations are still ongoing and insufficient assistance is being provided by the government and humanitarian partners (including Red Cross, WFP and Start Fund) via cash, rice and dry food. 748 medical teams have been deployed. Relief materials could not reach many remote areas which remain inaccessible. Drinking water and food have been reported among the most urgent needs.
  • While the rainfall situation may improve in the next 48 hours, the water in the rivers continues to flow above the danger level.
