Current Situation: Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Mongla have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number three (r) three. Low lying areas of the coastal districts and their off-shore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by a wind driven surge of height 2-3 feet above normal astronomical tide. All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna receded further at all points. The Ganges-Padma is flowing above danger level both at Goalundo & Bhagyakul. The Meghna at Bhairab Bazar continued falling. Small rivers surrounding Dhaka and Narayanganj observed slight rise & fall. The rivers are expected to fall in a lower rate for next 24, 48 & 72 hrs. Flood situation around Dhaka city especially in the eastern part of Dhaka is likely to improve further and will continue improving in the next 24, 48 & 72 hrs.

FLOOD, RAINFALL AND RIVER SITUATION SUMMARY (as on AUGUST 13, 2007)

FLOOD OUTLOOK

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna receded further at all points and is flowing 8 cm above danger level at Aricha which is expected to flow below dangle by next 24 hrs. The gradual recession of flood water from the settlement area is subjected to lagging one or two days.

The Ganges-Padma is flowing 35 cm above danger level both at Goalundo & Bhagyakul and is likely to recede further at Goalundo and Bhagyakul in the next 24, 48 & 72 hrs.

The kaliganga at Taraghat and the Dhaleswari at Jagir are in falling trend and are likely to continue falling.

Flood situation in the districts of Manikganj, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Gopalganj, Chandpur and Dohar & Nawabganj upazila of Dhaka is likely to continue improving further in the next 24, 48 & 72 hrs.

The Meghna at Bhairab Bazar continued falling. The flood situation in the districts of Narshingdi, Brahmanbaria, Kishoreganj & Gazipur will continue to improve further in the next 24, 48 & 72 hrs with the water receding in the river Meghna.

Small rivers surrounding Dhaka and Narayanganj observed slight rise & fall. The rivers are expected to fall in a lower rate for next 24, 48 & 72 hrs.

Flood situation around Dhaka city especially in the eastern part of Dhaka is likely to improve further and will continue improving in the next 24, 48 & 72 hrs.

The well marked low intensified into a land depression over West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh and is likely to move in north-westerly direction and weaken gradually by giving precipitation (Bangladesh Meteorological Department forecast). Recession of flood water in the central and south-central districts may slightly be influenced by this land depression and improvement of flood situation is likely to be delayed.
