- On 5 March 2023, a massive and devastating fire broke out in Kutupalong Balukhali refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Flames blazed for three hours in Camp 11, until the Rohingya refugee Safety Unit Volunteers, local fire fighters and local authorities managed to contain the fire.
- No deaths reported and 15 people with minor injuries and burns were treated. More than 12,000 people have been displaced and relocated with relatives, friends or in facilities such as learning centres. The fire destroyed an estimated 2,165 shelters and at least 94 essential facilities.
- While rapid needs assessments and financial gaps analysis are still ongoing, emergency assistance by governmental and non-governmental organizations (including DG ECHO partners) immediately started. In particular, the Disaster Management Unit (supported by DG ECHO with trainings, tools and equipment) has been the first and one of the main responders to the fire
