Bangladesh to buy 100,000 tons of wheat to ensure food supply

DHAKA, Jul 12, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX News Network) -- The Bangladeshi caretaker government Saturday approved the purchase of 100,000 tons of wheat at 419 U.S. dollars per ton through international tender to ensure food security in the country.

"The price of wheat in the international market remained low in the last 6-7 months," caretaker government Finance Adviser Mirza Azizul Islam told reporters after a meeting of the Council of Advisers' committee on public purchase at Planning Ministry.

He said the meeting approved the purchase reviewing the past and present prices of wheat on the international market and considering the risk of price fluctuation in the future.

Bangladesh has suffered a certain extent of food shortage after two serious floods and devastating cyclone last year. But the country had a bumper paddy harvest for the Boro crop early this year to make some alleviation for the shortage.
