Activation of Start Ready Disaster Risk Financing System and Start Fund Bangladesh Anticipatory Action for Cyclone Remal in Bangladesh

Start Bangladesh initiated critical disaster anticipatory action mechanisms to support communities in southern coastal Bangladesh. Two significant activations have taken place to address the imminent anticipated threat and impact of Cyclone Remal, benefiting over 30,000 people across 4 districts and 11 upazillas.

Details:

1. Activation of Start Ready Disaster Risk Financing System:

  • Date: 24 May 2024
  • Funding Amount: GBP 180,000

2. Activation of Start Fund Bangladesh:

  • Date: 23 May 2023
  • Funding Amount: GBP 17,000

Implementation:

Nine members of Start Bangladesh have been actively engaged in implementing lifesaving anticipatory actions since 23 May 2024. The coordinated efforts are concentrated in the following districts: Satkhira, Khulna, Barguna and Patuakhali. The combined activations are aimed at supporting over 30,000 individuals in 4 districts and 11 upazillas in southern coastal Bangladesh. These efforts focus on reducing the vulnerability of communities to the impacts of Cyclone Remal through preemptive measures and immediate response strategies.

The major activities include:

  • Multipurpose Cash Grant
  • Evacuation Support in coordination with govt.
  • Food Assistance and lighting facilities at Cyclone Shelters
  • Providing Tie-Down Kits and preparing Cyclone Shelters
  • Cattle shed preparation, fodder support and evacuation support
  • Provide safe water and Distribution of Hygiene Materials at cyclone shelter
  • Early Warning Dissemination in coordination with Govt.

In addition to anticipatory actions, Start Fund Bangladesh and its members are on standby to respond to the affected areas post-cyclone. This includes delivering essential relief and support to ensure the safety and well-being of impacted communities. Through the timely activation of financial resources and collaborative efforts, Start Bangladesh and its membership aims to mitigate the adverse effects of Cyclone Remal and support the most vulnerable communities in Bangladesh.
