28 killed, 100 missing as ferries capsize in Bangladesh

Dhaka (dpa) - At least 28 people were killed and a 100 are missing after two river ferries capsized in central Bangladesh during a tropical storm, the state run radio said in Dhaka Tuesday.

The radio said the two boats were caught in the storm in the Meghna river late Monday night.

One of the ferries capsized near Ashuganj town, 90 kilometres east of the capital Dhaka, while the other was struck by strong winds near Nabinagar town further down river.

The radio quoting local rescue officials said the search for the missing persons was continuing. Both boats were reportedly overcrowded when the mishaps occurred, the radio said.
