ICRC News 03/15
The ICRC last week facilitated the transfer of an injured Azerbaijani serviceman to his country's authorities.

The operation took place between the regions of Barda and Agdam, with the full cooperation of all sides and in accordance with the wishes of the man himself.

The serviceman had been injured at the time of his capture (in the region of Agdam), and ICRC delegates, including doctors, had regularly visited him while he was being held in Nagorny Karabakh. They spoke to him and assessed his condition before the transfer.

In accordance with its mandate to act as a neutral intermediary, the ICRC has been helping to organize such transfers in the region since 1992, and the organization stands ready to support any similar operation in the future.

In Azerbaijan, the ICRC focuses on the consequences of the Nagorny Karabakh conflict, including the missing persons issue and the problems of detainees who are being held in connection with the conflict or are otherwise vulnerable.
