On 07 and 18 May, 2012 an earthquake struck Gakh, Zagatala, Sheki and Balakan districts of Azerbaijan Republic. As a result of the earthquake many constructions and private houses were damaged. In accordance with its mission and mandate the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society considered it necessary to provide relevant humanitarian assistance to people affected by the earthquake. For this purpose the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society conducted an assessment in Zagatala and Gakh districts. With participation of the representatives of local authorities of these districts there were identified villages and families who were in most of need of humanitarian assistance. As a continuation of this work, on 02 and 23 July our Society provided food assistance to 700 families in Zagatala and Gakh districts. On 12 July, 2012 the National Society provided a humanitarian assistance including household items such as hygienic sets, towels, bedding sets, kitchen sets, blankets, mattresses, rubber boots, mobile gas stoves and water jerry cans.
Humanitarian assistance was distributed to people living in the below –mentioned villages of Zagatala and Gakh villages:
38 families (218people) in Chobankol village of Zagatala distirct;
98 families (535 people) in Gimir village of Zagatala district;
79 families (389 people) in Bazar village of Zagatala district;
174 families ( 943 people) in Zeyem village of Zagatala district;
61 families (271 people) in Gozbarakh village of Zagatala district;
191 families (856people) in Gullik village of Gakh district;
44 families ( 192 people) in Zerne village of Gakh district;
4 families (14 people) in Lekit village of Gakh district;
9 families (46 people) in Lekit Kotuklu village of Gakh district;
2 families (9 people) in Gum village of Gakh district;
It should be mentioned that this humanitarian assistance was provided with financial assistance of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (DREF).
