SITUATION UPDATE
As of late 29 September, a cumulative total of 98,000 ethnic Armenians have fled through the Lachin Corridor. Displaced people arriving in Armenia are registered by the government in designated centers at the border. Those who do not have a predetermined place of residence are provided accommodation and if needed transport. There is significant demand for food, Non-Food Items (NFIs) and psycho-social support in the registration points, as well as the crisis centres established across the country.
WFP RESPONSE
In response to requests from authorities, WFP has deployed two Mobile Storage Units (MSUs) to the Syunik province, where displaced people have been arriving over the last five days. These units facilitate the provision of hot meals and are used for the storage of humanitarian supplies.
WFP is complementing the Government's immediate response efforts by initially supplying 21,000 hot meals to displaced individuals at the border registration point in Goris. Additionally, WFP has delivered 4,000 family food parcels to Syunik, which will cover the food requirements of 16,000 people with another 3,500 parcels being prepared for delivery.
WFP also has food cards readily available to assist more than 6,000 individuals, which can be distributed upon Government activation. As the situation evolves,
WFP is mobilizing additional support to local authorities in provinces hosting displaced populations.
UN agencies in Armenia are finalising an Inter-Agency Response Plan (IARP), which has an initial target of assisting 40,000 of the projected 90,000 displaced people, along with 2,130 hosting households in Armenia, in direct coordination with the Government.
RESOURCE OUTLOOK
Interest has been expressed by several donors and negotiations are ongoing.
ASSESSMENT AND MONITROING
WFP has been present at the border registration points and triage centres administered by the Government since the outset of the crisis, monitoring the situation and providing support as requested while preparing to support the wider national response.
The Government and UN agencies are planning a joint rapid needs assessment, covering displaced people and host communities which will guide future support.
