UMCOR is responding to the increasingly critical health care needs of Occupied Palestinian Territories through its ecumenical partner, Action by Churches Together (ACT). Seventy percent of the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza live in extreme poverty, making less than $2.00 per day (World Bank, August 2002). ACT is working through the Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza and St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Nablus to bring basic health care as well as hospital services to people who have great needs but almost no ability to pay. You can help by giving to the International Disaster Response Advance #982450-8.
On April 22, A cyclone ripped through three districts of Assam, India, killing at least 36 people and rendering thousands homeless. The cyclone was the worst storm to hit the state in 40 years. UMCOR will be responding to these needs through our partner, Action by Churches Together (ACT). Please give to Advance #982450-8 so that United Methodists can provide support for those who are suffering around the globe. Only when UMCOR has funds available in the International Disaster Response account can we quickly be present in emergency situations. For example, UMCOR has sent a $10,000 grant to The Argentine Evangelical Methodist Church to help those affected by the flooding in Argentina's Santa Fe province. The provincial governor says that the floods are the worse since Santa Fe City (1573). At least nine people have died.
Yesterday an earthquake struck Bingöl, Turkey. UMCOR is sending an emergency grant of $10,000 from the Turkey Earthquake fund (Advance #675205-6) to a partner agency, the International Blue Crescent (IBC). IBC is providing food, clothing, and other assistance.
UMCOR is responding to the crisis in Iraq through its ecumenical partners, including Action by Churches Together (ACT), Church World Service (CWS), the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), Norwegian Church Aid, and the Mennonite Central Committee. Through CWS, UMCOR is addressing the needs of the children who, in the last two decades, have suffered greatly from both internal and external forces. Through the MECC's eight major relief centers in the four largest cities we are reaching out to meet basic needs. Please give to the Iraq Emergency Advance #623225-4.
