Wildfires

Argentina (Update)

On 17 January 2025, the European Commission Emergency Response Coordination Centre informed that since 15 January, a wildfire has been burning in southern Argentina, causing widespread evacuations and significant damage. According to the JRC Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), the burnt area now spans approximately 2,934 hectares. As of 17 January, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reports that at least 1,500 people have been displaced, 150 others have been affected, 25 houses and one school have been destroyed, and 200 houses have sustained damage in the town of Epuyén, located in the Cushamen Department in the northwestern part of Chubut Province, within the Patagonia region. GWIS forecasts that fire danger in the affected areas will remain very high over the next 24 hours, further complicating containment efforts. The reports are available from: ECHO
