Argentines rally round for flood victims

Despite the country's economic problems, 76 Argentine Red Cross (CRA) centres are continuing to receive donations - especially food and hygiene products - from the public for the victims of the devastating floods in Santa Fe province.

The CRA appeal for Santa Fe has benefited from a number of concerts. At most, the audience was encouraged to bring along non-perishable goods, clothes and hygiene products. The largest event, which attracted some of Argentina's top performers as well as 7,000 spectators, took place at Buenos Aires's Luna Park. The show raised 53,000 pesos (US$ 18,000).

"The situation in the evacuation centres remains critical," said CRA Vice-President Belkis de Castano. "Thanks to this donation, we can buy mattresses, blankets and other goods for thousands of evacuees."
