Argentina - Wildfires, update (WHO PAHO, MADS, Gobierno de Córdoba, media , JRC GWIS) (ECHO Daily Flash of 13 October 2023)

  • A number of wildfires have been burning across central and northern Argentina since 10 October, resulting in evacuations and damage.

  • The Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development (MADS) and WHO PAHO reports, as of 12 October, seven active wildfires, of which two in each in Catamarca and Jujuy Provinces, and one each in Córdoba, Tucumán and San Luis Provinces. According to the JRC Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), the burnt area across the Provinces of San Luis and Córdoba is more than 20,000 ha.

  • WHO PAHO reports approximately 800 evacuated people across the Córdoba Province, where the worst affected area is the Punilla Department and particularly the Cabalango Municipality.

  • Over the next 24 hours, according to JRC GWIS, the fire danger forecast remains from high to extreme across central and northern Argentina.
