DHA-GENEVA INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1

1. EMERGENCY SITUATION UNDER CONTROL AFTER WIDESPREAD FLOODING IN COUNTRY'S MAIN AGRICULTURAL AREA DUE TO HEAVY RAINS AND OVERFLOW OF SALADO RIVER IN BUENOS AIRES PROVINCE ON 11 MAY 1993. FOUR MILLION HECTARES WERE REPORTED INITIALLY FLOODED AND TOWNS AFFECTED INCLUDED JUNIN, GENERAL VIAMONTE, CASTELLI, GENERAL PINTO, LAS FLORES, GENERAL BELGRANO, CHASCOMAS, 25 DE MAYO, ROQUE PEREZ AND GENERAL VILLEGAS. LOSSES TO GRAIN, MEAT AND DAIRY INDUSTRIES ESTIMATED AT USD 400 MILLION, BUT FULL DAMAGE ASSESSMENT UNDERWAY WITH PARTICIPATION OF STAFF FROM UNDP PROJECTS QUOTE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SALADO RIVER BASIN UNQUOTE AND QUOTE MONITORING OF NATURAL RESOURCES UNQUOTE.

2. AUTHORITIES MAKING EFFORTS TO DEVISE PLAN TO HELP FARMERS AFFECTED BY FINANCIAL LOSSES.

3. NO REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE RECEIVED BY DHA-GENEVA.
