Argentina, Brazil - Severe weather (NOAA-CPC, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 03 December 2024)

  • Since 27 November, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds have been affecting southern Brazil, in particular Rio Grande do Sul state, and the neighbouring Argentina, causing severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • According to media reports, as of 2 December, in Argentina, one child died due to a wind-related incident in Ordóñez town in eastern Córdoba Province, in central Argentina.
  • In Brazil, according to the same source, 25 people have been injured due to a wind-related incident that occurred in Arroio do Tigre municipality, in central Rio Grande do Sul state, and at least 800,000 people have been affected by power outages across the state. Several buildings have been destroyed also in Carazinho city, in the South region of Rio Grande do Sul.
  • Over the next 48 hours, more rainfall is still forecast over southern Brazil and northern Argentina.
