The relocation of the Angolan refugees from the border area of Sinjembela, to Nangweshi, located some 120 kilometres inside Zambian territory has been completed. Since the 1st of March, when IOM began transporting the refugees, until 29 March, close to 7,000 people were transported on board IOM hired trucks. Before the 1st of March UNHCR had already transported some 2,100 people. The total number of Angolan refugees who have been transported away from the border stands at 9,000. This was a difficult operation because heavy rains turned roads into quagmires. After the ferry that crosses the Zambezi river broke down, the Zambian army allowed IOM and other relief agencies the use its amphibian trucks to ferry relief items across the river. IOM will continue providing transport away from the border areas to any new refugees that may arrive in Sinjembela.
