Zaire: Over a billion square metres cleared of landmines

Mbanza Congo - At least 1.6 billion square metres of land was cleared of landmines from 2006 to 2014 in northern Zaire province by several operators.

The information was released Thursday in Mbanza Congo by Zaire province governor José Joanes André.

The governor was speaking at the opening of the ninth plenary session on actions against landmines taking place in the region.

José Joanes Andre said the demining process covered 619 kilometres of road in the province.

He said that this has enabled to clear the itinerary for the high tension power line from the gas station currently under construction in the municipality of Soyo to Mbanza Congo, over a distance of 350 kilometres.

According to him, the landmine clearing operation paved the way for the construction of more schools, medical centres, communication means and other projects.

The ninth plenary session on actions against landmines is being witnessed by the chairman of the Inter-sector Commission for Demining and Humanitarian Aid (CNIDAH), Santana André Pitra “Petroff”, and is analysing the situation of the landmine sector in the province.
