WFP convoy attacked in Angola, one dead

LISBON, May 2 (Reuters) - A truck driver was killed and two were injured when a World Food Programme (WFP) convoy was attacked by a band of armed men in western Angola, Portugal's Lusa news agency said on Tuesday.

In a report from Luanda, Lusa said the attack ocurred on Sunday between Lobito and Cubal, some 500 km (300 miles) south of the capital, in the province of Benguela.

Around 300 armed men ambushed a convoy of four lorries carrying some 50 tonnes of food to displaced people in and around Cubal, the agency said quoting a survivor.

The dead and injured were the drivers of the first three trucks. The fourth escaped, Lusa said, adding that none of the victims were WFP staff.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes because of Angola's long-running civil war. The United Nations warned recently that the former Portuguese colony was facing a humanitarian disaster because of the fighting.

Lusa did not say who was responsible for the attack. The government, which says it controls most of Angola, has often accused rebel group UNITA of acts of banditry.
