Operational Updates

57% 43% El Niño Response: In May, WFP and its Cooperating Partner, World Vision, together with the Government of Angola and other stakeholders, continued efforts to mitigate the impact of the El Niño-induced drought in Huíla and Cunene provinces. Through its targeted supplementary feeding programme, WFP provided nutrition assistance to 1,925 children under the age of five and pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls. To meet their nutritional requirements, WFP distributed approximately 5.6 metric tons of Ready-to-Use Supplementary Food (RUSF). Additionally, WFP continued to deliver social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) messaging to parents, caregivers, and community leaders to promote healthy and nutritious practices.

Refugee Response: From 26 to 29 May, WFP, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), organized a joint donor mission to the Lóvua refugee settlement in Lunda Norte province. The delegation, composed of the British Ambassador to Angola and highlevel representatives from the Embassies of the United Kingdom, France, and the People’s Republic of China, held meetings with provincial and municipal authorities, conducted field visits to WFP and UNHCR programmes, and engaged with refugee leaders.

In coordination with UNHCR, WFP continued the development of a strategy to transition its refugee assistance model from a status-based system to one based on vulnerability. This strategic shift aims to deliver more sustainable food security and nutrition outcomes by tailoring assistance packages to refugees’ specific needs. As part of this effort, WFP conducted focus group discussions to define targeting criteria, ensuring a participatory and consultative process through direct engagement with refugees.

As part of its resilience and livelihood support activities, WFP completed the distribution of fruit seedlings to refugees, host, and local community members. Between February and May 2025, more than 8,650 seedlings were provided to nearly 160 households. These efforts aim to enhance food security, diversify livelihoods, and increase income.
