Operational Updates
El Niño Response: WFP, in collaboration with the Government of Angola and other partners, continued its efforts to help mitigate the impact of the El Niño-induced drought in Cunene and Huíla provinces. In March, WFP provided nutrition assistance to ~3,800 children aged 6 to 59 months and pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls (PBWG), distributing around 9 metric tons of Readyto-Use Supplementary Food (RUSF) to meet their nutritional needs. In order to improve food security and treatment outcomes, WFP provided food vouchers to the families of children and PBWG diagnosed with malnutrition. These vouchers were redeemed at designated retailers for food baskets comprising maize meal, pulses, vegetable oil, and sugar. In total, 7,890 people were assisted, with approximately 140 metric tons of food commodities distributed covering a period of two months.
Refugee Response: WFP continues to support refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) residing in the Lóvua settlement in Lunda Norte province. In March, WFP distributed approximately 266 metric tons of maize meal, pulses, and salt to ~6,240 refugees. Due to critical resource constraints, the assistance currently provided covers only 75 percent of their monthly food needs. WFP urgently requires additional funding to prevent further ration cuts and scale up livelihood and resilience support activities aimed at strengthening the self-reliance of refugees and their host communities.
