Highlights:

  • Five months into the outbreak, 18 of the 21 provinces have been affected. The situation continues to evolve, with new hotspots emerging in Cuanza Sul, Huíla, and Namibe, including Tombwa district in Namibe province.
  • As of 31 May 2025, the total number of reported cases was 24,135, with over 713 deaths. In the last week of May alone, 1,799 new cases were recorded, reflecting a 35% decrease compared to the previous week. The national Case Fatality Rate (CFR) stands at 3.0% during the last two weeks of May 2025.
  • Children between 0-4 years have been the most affected since the beginning of the outbreak to the last week of May 2025, with 3,344 new cases representing 14% of the cumulative cases and 110 deaths reported, representing 15% of the cumulative deaths.
  • In response to the emerging hotspots in Namibe, Huíla, and Cunene, UNICEF dispatched 3,000 simplified cholera kits to provincial health authorities. Each kit includes 1 liter of bleach, an 800g bar of soap, and an informational flyer. The kits have been distributed to families of cases arriving at the Cholera Treatment Centres (CTCs).
  • UNICEF supported the second phase of the reactive Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) campaign, which was completed successfully. This phase targeted populations in a total of seven provinces:
    • two provinces (Bengo and Luanda) covered during the first phase (targeting areas not covered in the first round)
    • as well as five newly affected provinces (Benguela, Cuanza Norte, Malanje, Namibe, and Cabinda) experiencing a surge in cases.
  • The campaign prioritized high-risk neighborhoods and reached 686,732 people, which is 98% of the target population.
