Epidemiological overview (as on 15 January 2025)

  • 3 out of 21 provinces affected. (Bengo, Luanda and Icolo e Bengo).
  • 11 out of 326 municipalities affected.
  • Total 332 cases, of which 66 confirmed and 20 deaths have been reported. Luanda province is the most affected, with 259 cases.
  • Children and women are the most affected. Highest case count is 0-9 (32.2%), followed by the 10-19 years age group (24.6%).
  • Out of the total caseload, 52.4% are women.
  • 10 deaths reported in the age group 0-9 years.

Epidemiological situation of cholera in Angola

With the confirmation of the first case on 7 January 2025, the Ministry of Health, Government of Angola declared an outbreak of Cholera. On 8 January 2025, the Minister of Health convened the first National Coordination Technical Meeting. Directors of national, municipal and general hospitals, along with the Directors of provincial health, ministerial departments and partnersattended the meeting. The Technical Commission activated the National Plan for Cholera Response. Resources were mobilized for health workers and medical staff. The first case was registered in the Cacuaco Municipality of Luanda Province, which is located in a suburban area, with a population of around 1,225,220 inhabitants.
