Southern Africa - Several cholera outbreaks (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners, UN OCHA, Authorities) (ECHO Daily Flash of 17 January 2025)

  • On 7 January, the Ministry of Health of Angola declared a cholera outbreak in the municipality of Cacuaco, located in the province of Luanda, which has an estimated population of over 1.2 million people. As of 15 January, there have been 332 reported cases, including 66 confirmed cases and 20 deaths. Luanda province is the most severely affected, accounting for 259 of the cases. Lack of sanitation and drinking water in vulnerable areas pose significant challenges for effective response efforts.
  • There is an on-going outbreak in Mozambique, Nampula Province, registering 302 cumulative cases and 29 deaths, case fatality rate of 9.6%. Since late December there has been no adequate surveillance system due to political unrest.
  • Malawi has reported 267 cases and 14 deaths in 10 districts since August 2024 with a case fatality rate of 5.2%.
  • Zimbabwe has had 287 new cholera cases since 26 November in three areas.
  • Zambia has reported 18 confirmed cases in Nakonde district.
