Minister announces measures to combat drought in Cunene

Speaking to Angop after three-day visit to Bié province, the official said that the Executive has outlined several projects for the coming months. The objective is essentially to tackle the negative effects of the drought affecting populations of southern Angola, in particular in the province of Cunene.

Among the measures to be implemented, the minister pointed to the construction of two hydroelectric dams in the Cuvelai, to accumulate water for the consumption of the populations. The measures include creation of conditions for the cattle raising and irrigation of the agricultural fields. Another project, according to the minister, is related to the construction of a water diversions in the Cafu area to the Oshanas area to ensure water to disaster-affected communities, through pipelines.

He also announced plans to launch public tender on next few days for the award of the contract, noting that the project will be implemented within three years, without announcing the monetary value to be invested.

He said that these are technical engineering solutions that will entail the transfer of flow, with the withdrawal of water in areas with some abundance for areas with large deficits.
