Emergency Assistance for Internally Displaced Persons in Angola

On November 30 (Tue), the Government of Japan decided to extend an emergency grant assistance of US$3,800,000 to the World Food Programme (WFP) to relieve the plight of internally displaced persons in the Republic of Angola. Japan's assistance will be used in support of WFP's activities for internally displaced persons in Angola, including the provision and transportation of food.

In Angola, the number of internally displaced persons has been increasing as a result of civil war between the government and the anti-government organization UNITA. It was recently announced that the number has reached two million.

The Government of Japan has been assisting Angolan refugees and internally displaced persons as well as supporting Angola's rehabilitation and development. The decision to extend this assistance is based on humanitarian considerations in response to an appeal by the WFP.
