Floods near the Angolan border with the Democratic Republic of Congo are causing severe problems to residents and to recent Angolan returnees who have recently returned to their country from the DRC.
Statistics compiled by CWS partner Diakonia IERA indicates that the flooding has destroyed or damaged 720 homes, and have affected more than 1,000 families.
Diakonia IERA is responding by providing food and non-food items, including cooking utensils, buckets, clothes and blankets, for those affected. Distribution has begun and will continue through February.
A long-term recovery plan by Diakonia IERA will include advocacy for construction of new and better-constructed homes and providing agricultural tools and seeds for the planting season that starts in March 2012.
CWS may issue an appeal for this response once more detailed needs assessment information is secured by our local partner and a longer-term recovery plan is determined.
