Angola/Huíla: Over USD 100 million for water projects

Lubango, 03/18 - At least USD 106.5 million will be spent by the Angolan government on an Industrial Development Project of the Water Sector (PDISA), to be implemented in nine provinces of the country, in a five-year period.

This was disclosed to the press on Monday by the World Bank (WB) consultant, Amândio Luís Gomes, during the ceremony of presenting the project to Angolan authorities.

The programme will benefit some 1.461,200 Angolan citizens, said the official, adding that from the amount to be released for the project, USD 56.6 million will be funded by the World Bank. The benefiting cities are Lubango, Mbanza Congo, Menongue, Luena, Kuito, Malanje, N'dalatanto, Huambo and Uíge.

Amândio Luís Gomes also referred that the programme comprises four components, and the first is estimated at USD 36.7 million and is linked to the development of institutions of the water sector in these regions.

The second relates to the management of water resources, estimated at USD 10 million, and the third, estimated at USD 36.8, foresees the rehabilitation of water supply systems.

Associated with the upgrading and institutional changes, the last phase of the endeavour will benefit from USD 11million.

The project to be implemented by the Ministry of Energy and Waters (MINEA), within the Angolan legal and regulations framework for environmental management, and comprises sub-projects of environmental protection.
