Angola: Women and children are government's priority

Geneva, 05/21 - Angolan health minister, Albertina Hamukwaya, said Tuesday in Geneva (Switzerland) that the government defined as its priority groups for health care, women and children.

Albertina Hamukwaya gave this information during a speech she delivered at the 56th session of the World Health Summit, which took place on Monday. According to the minister, due to the long lasting war that devastated Angola, the government is aware of the high number of children living in a hard situation which causes their slow growth and development.

As a way of giving solutions to the problem the government has directed its attention to defining strategic integrated activities on childhood sickness, implementation of community initiatives, such as the creation of water supply posts, building residential toilets and schools in urban areas as well as carry out cleaning campaigns, de-mining programs, and family integration.

These programs are carried out in conjunction with several social organisms, namely, Education, Social Welfare and Reintegration Ministry, Non-governmental organizations, international partners and United Nation agencies.

Albertina Hamukwaya pointed out that only a multi-sectoral approach and the adoption of specific policies will bring about a positive change to the situation.

The minister added that World Health Organization (WHO) plays an important role in gathering technical and financial resources needed to implement the referred policies and programs adapted to the reality of each country. Source: ANGOP
