Luanda - Angola still needs 450 to 500 meteorological stations to cover all localities and provide weather information in a timely manner to ensure the protection of lives and property, as well as prevention of natural disasters.

This information was released to Angop this week by the director general of the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INAMET), Domingos do Nascimento.

Nascimento was speaking at the World Meteorological Day, to be commemorated on Saturday (23) under the motto "The sun, the earth and the time”.

He said that INAMET currently controls only 42 meteorological stations which, according to him, are insufficient to support the volume of weather information needed for the country.

The official also said that the institution he runs relies on support of about 60 private meteorological stations, providing credible data.

INAMET operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology.
