Stories from the Field
Magbola Gaber Saleh Hari, a Sudanese refugee and single mother of seven, sought refuge in Egypt a year ago after the conflict in Sudan started. Her journey to Egypt was fraught with danger, but Magbola’s determination to protect her children saw them through safely. “When the conflict erupted, our whole lives changed. I fled Darfur decades ago; I never thought I’d have to leave Khartoum as well. It was terrifying,” Magbola shared. “It was a perilous journey; you hear the most terrifying things. As a mother, you want to protect your children, especially your daughters, at all costs. We were lucky to make it to Egypt unharmed.”
Magbola and her children have been living in Egypt for a year. Despite the challenges, she remains hopeful and prays for the safety and reunion with her husband. “My children need me, my youngest three have medical conditions. Who would watch after them if I work?” she explained. As a single mother in a new country, Magbola has been unable to find a job due to her own health issues and the need to care for her children.
The multi-purpose cash assistance she receives from UNHCR has been a lifeline, helping her pay rent, buy medication, and provide food for her family. Though the soaring inflation in Egypt poses additional challenges, Magbola feels grateful for the assistance. “The cash assistance has improved our living conditions and reduced the financial stress. It gives me more energy to take care of my family. Despite our need for increased support to make ends meet, I still feel safe and protected,” she expressed.
