Algeria hosts refugees in the five camps near Tindouf as well as refugees and asylum seekers inurban areas. The refugee population in the camps are Sahrawi refugees who have been displacedfor more than 47 years

UNHCR ensures that Sahrawi refugeeshave access to basic rights and services while improving their living standards by delivering humanitarian assistance. UNHCR’s strategic vision is to ensure that refugees and asylum seekersin urban areasenjoy a favourable protection environment in line with international standards. UNHCR strategically uses safe and dignified third country solutions to enhance protection.

Key Priorities

Protect

▪ UNHCR undertakes key protection activities for refugees and asylum seekers in urban settings.

▪ UNHCR advocates with Algerian Government counterparts to ensure protection of refugees and asylum seekers and builds the capacities of local authorities to bridge the gaps caused by the absence of national asylum law.

▪ UNHCR intervenes to prevent the arrest and expulsion refugees and asylum seekers and advocates with the authorities for their release.

▪UNHCR aims at ensuringthat children are safe from violence, abuse, exploitation and separation while also respecting the Best Interest of the Child.

▪UNHCR works to prevent and respond to the risk of gender-based violence (GBV)faced by refugees and asylumseekers.

▪UNHCRworks to ensuresafe and dignified third-country solutions for refugeesby promoting and expanding resettlement and complementary pathways.

▪UNHCR strengthens the protection mechanisms and participatory approaches of Sahrawi refugees that encourage community-based engagement, mobilization, and empowerment.

▪UNHCR advocates for better inclusion of urban refugees and asylum-seekers in terms of access to education and healthcare.
