This flagship report on disability in the Arab region in 2023 presents and analyzes statistics relating to the demographic characteristics and socioeconomic situation of persons with disabilities in the Arab region. This is the second edition, following the Disability in the Arab Region 2018 report. Published every five years, the report is based on country data from recent national censuses and surveys that have been harmonized and verified by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia in accordance with international standards.
The 2023 report includes three parts: the first part offers a regional comparison of national disability prevalences. The second part provides information on the socioeconomic situation of persons with disabilities in comparison to those without disabilities. It analyzes disability and vulnerability in terms of social protection, nutrition and health care, education, and employment. The third part presents country profiles with visualizations illustrating a common set of indicators in each country.
While countries in the region are increasingly committed to realizing the rights of persons with disabilities, progress is slow. The report shows that in terms of literacy, education and employment, persons with disabilities remain disadvantaged. Women with disabilities in rural areas are particularly marginalized.
