Over the past few days, northern and north-eastern Algeria have been experiencing wildfires that resulted in casualties and evacuations. A total of 97 fires have been recorded across 16 prefectures and the worst affected are Béjaïa, Bouira and Jijel.

According to national authorities, at least 34 people died, 26 have been injured, and 1,500 others have been evacuated. National authorities deployed 8,000 personnel and 529 trucks to battle the fires.

Over the next 48 hours, according to JRC EFFIS, the fire danger forecast is expected to be high to very extreme across northern Algeria.
