Algeria - Severe weather and floods (IFRC, media, CatNat, Météo Algérie) (ECHO Daily Flash of 23 January 2026)

  • Severe weather, characterized by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and snowfall, affected the Relizane, Chlef, Tiaret, Tissemsilt, Médéa, Tipaza, and Aïn Defla province of northern Algeria on 20 January, causing flash floods that resulted in casualties and damage.

  • According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), as of 23 January, three people died, including one in Relizane and one in Chlef provinces. Media reports, At least 50 houses have been affected by floods in the S'Tal district of Relizane, and two in the Ksarli district of Tipaza province.

  • On 23-24 January, more rainfall is expected on northern Algeria.
