Tirana, 24 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - Albanian
media reported today that President Sali Berisha has signed a decree against
pyramid investment schemes.
The decree is designed to meet calls
by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) for the
appointment of independent administrators. The administrator's job is to
take control of fraudulent business schemes and close them down with the
least possible damage to the public.
The collapse of the schemes in February led to the current Albanian crisis.
Albania is holding crucial elections this Sunday. Meanwhile, violence is continuing is Albania. The latest victims included three policemen. News reports say they were injured in an attack by an armed gang in the capital, Tirana.
