Floods in Albania: EADRCC urgent disaster assistance request

  1. In accordance with the procedures at reference, EADRCC has received today, 07 JAN 2010, a disaster assistance request from Albania. The following information was provided.

2. General Situation

Type of the Disaster: Floods

Date and Time the Disaster occurred: Started from 27 December 2009

Location of the Disaster: Albania, Shkodra and Lezha regions

3. Initial Assessment of the damage and description of the situation.

3.1. Due to continuous rainfall during November and December 2009, water levels in the lakes and on the Drini River have risen. As a result, the Shkodra and Lezha regions have been flooded continuously from 27 December, 2009.

3.2. Currently more than 1200 building/houses are flooded (some partially); more than 9000 ha farmland are flooded. So far 730 families from the district of Shkodra have been evacuated from flooded areas. Many displaced families are sheltered in student dormitories provided by the Government. The rest of the displaced people have been sheltered by friends and relatives.

3.3. The Albanian Government foresees that in the coming days 3000 to 3500 additional families have to be evacuated. The Albanian Government has declared "the state of civil emergency" and has established the Inter-ministerial Committee.

3.4. Many persons don't have access to drinkable water supply. There are damages to the transport and agricultural infrastructure.
