Countries affected
More than 70 nations are affected by landmines and even more are affected by explosive remnants of war. The contamination has a negative impact on men, women, boys and girls, and community livelihoods.
Mine Ban Treaty
The Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction (APMBT) entered into force in 1999. There are 156 states parties to the treaty, while 39 countries remain outside the treaty. This treaty will soon be joined in law by the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), which prohibits the use, transfer, sale and stockpiling of cluster munitions. The CCM further strengthens mine action by providing obligations for future states parties to clear unexploded submunitions. The CCM will enter into force August 1, 2010.
