Since 8 July, a wildfire has been burning in southern Albania. The main wildfire has been recorded close to the Dropull municipality (Gjirokastër County) and according to the JRC European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) has an extension of 1,670 ha.
According to media, there are no immediate reports of humanitarian impact and damage. The wildfire started as an isolated event, but it moved close to populated areas and it posed a danger to residents in the towns of Frashtan, Gorica and Dropull.
National authorities under the coordination with the National Agency of Civil Protection are involved on the firefighting activities. Media report that the fire is controlled but not yet extinguished.
On 9 July, Albania requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) consisting of aerial firefighting means. Greece offered and deployed four aircraft (two small PZT and two Canadair) to Albania, which are currently conducting fire suppression operations. Croatia and Italy were also ready to mobilise rescEU aircraft, however their deployment was not needed.
