Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)
Cases:One new WPV1 positive case in 2025 from Afghanistan reported this week. The new WPV1 case is from Paktika province (Bermel district) with date of onset on 13th November 2025. In total, 52 WPV1-positive cases have been confirmed in 2025 to date (21 from Afghanistan and 31 from Pakistan in 2025) and 1 WPV1 case reported in 2026 from Pakistan.
Environment: Twenty-Seven new WPV1 positive environmental samples reported this week – 20 from Afghanistan (15 in 2025 and 5 in 2026) and 7 from Pakistan in 2026. The new WPV1 positive samples reported from Afghanistan are: 15 from Kandahar province (all from Kandahar district), 3 from Hilmand province (all from Lashkargah district), and 1 each from Zabul province (Qalat district) and Hirat province (Herat district) with collection dates between 24th November 2025 – 24th January 2026. While the new WPV1 positive samples reported from Pakistan are: 6 from Sindh province (Badin and Kashmore districts, and Karachi Central, Karachi Keamari, Karachi South, and Karachi East towns) and 1 from Balochistan province (Dera Bugti district) with collection dates between 9th – 12th February 2026. In total, 741 WPV1-positive environmental samples have been reported in 2025 (90 from Afghanistan and 651 from Pakistan) and 44 WPV1-positive environmental samples reported in 2026 (5 from Afghanistan and 39 from Pakistan).
