Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)
Cases: Five new WPV1 positive cases reported this week – 4 from Afghanistan in 2025 and 1 from Pakistan in 2026. The new WPV1 cases reported from Afghanistan are from: 2 from Paktika province (both from Bermel district), 1 each from Badghis province (Balamurghab district) and from Helmand province (Musaqala district) with onset dates between 27th October – 21st November 2025, while the new reported WPV1 case from Pakistan is from Sindh province (Sujawal district) with date of onset 10th February 2026. In total, 51 WPV1-positive cases have been confirmed in 2025 to date (20 from Afghanistan and 31 from Pakistan in 2025) and 1 WPV1 case reported in 2026 from Pakistan.
Environment: Six new WPV1 positive environmental samples of 2026 reported this week from Pakistan. The new WPV1 positive samples are reported from: 3 from Sindh province (1 each from Hyderabad, Kambar, and Mirpurkhas districts), 2 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (both from Wazirestan North district), and 1 from Punjab province (Lahore district) with collection dates between 4 th – 9 th February 2026. In total, 726 WPV1-positive environmental samples have been reported in 2025 (75 from Afghanistan and 651 from Pakistan) and 32 WPV1-positive environmental samples reported in 2026 (all from Pakistan).
Vaccine-derivedpoliovirus (VDPV)
Cases:
• cVDPV2: No new cVDPV2 positive cases reported this week. The cVDPV2 case count to date in 2026 is 1 (from Somalia) and in 2025 is 40 (30 from Yemen, 7 from Sudan, 2 from Somalia and 1 from Djibouti) Environment
• cVDPV1: No new cVDPV1 isolates were reported this week. cVDPV1 were confirmed from 10 environmental samples in 2025 (all from Djibouti).
• cVDPV2: No new cVDPV2 positive environmental samples were reported this week. To date, cVDPV2 was confirmed in 51 sewage water samples in 2025 (17 from Djibouti, 13 each from Somalia and Yemen, 7 from occupied Palestinian territory, and 1 from Sudan) and 2 in 2026 (from Somalia).
Advance notification: 1 positive cVDPV2 case and 1 cVDPV2 positive environmental sample were advanced notified this week from Somalia in 2026. Details will be shared within next bulletin.
