Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)
Cases: Three new WPV-1 positive cases in 2025 from Afghanistan reported this week. The new WPV1-positive cases were all from Paktika province (Bermel district) with onset dates between 6th
and 10th October 2025. In total, 47 WPV1-positive cases have been confirmed in 2025 to date (16 from Afghanistan and 31 from Pakistan in 2025).
Environment: Three new WPV1 positive environmental samples were reported this week – 2 in 2025 from Afghanistan and 1 in 2026 from Pakistan. The new WPV1 positive environmental samples reported from Afghanistan in 2025 are from: 1 each from Kandahar province/district and from Kabul province/district with collection dates on 26th October and 23rd December 2025 respectively, while the WPV1-positive sample reported in 2026 from Pakistan is from Balochistan province (Kech district) with collection date on 19th January 2026. In total, 726 WPV1-positive environmental samples have been reported in 2025 (75 from Afghanistan and 651 from Pakistan) and 24 WPV1-positive environmental samples reported in 2026 (all from Pakistan).
