Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)
Cases: No new WPV-1 positive cases reported this week. In total, 39 WPV1-positive cases have been confirmed in 2025 (9 from Afghanistan and 30 from Pakistan in 2025).
Environment: Seven new WPV1 positive environmental samples in 2025 from Pakistan reported this week. The newly reported WPV1 positive environmental samples are: 2 each from Sindh province (East and South towns of Karachi), from Punjab province (both from Rawalpindi district), from Balochistan province (DeraBugti and Barkhan districts), and 1 from Islamabad province (Islamabad Capital Territory district), with collection dates between 3 rd – 17th December 2025. In total, 715 WPV1-positive environmental samples have been reported in 2025 (64 from Afghanistan and 651 from Pakistan).
Vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV)
Cases:
• cVDPV2: No new cVDPV2 positive cases reported this week. The cVDPV2 case count in 2025 to date is 40 (30 from Yemen, 7 from Sudan, 2 from Somalia and 1 from Djibouti)
Environment
• cVDPV1: No new cVDPV1 isolates were reported this week. cVDPV1 were confirmed from 10 environmental samples in 2025 (all from Djibouti).
• cVDPV2: Two new cVDPV2 positive environmental samples in 2025 from Somalia were reported this week. The newly reported ES samples are: one each from Banadir province (Hamarweyn district) and a new collection site in Middle Shabelle province (Jowhar district) with collection dates on 4 th and 7 th December 2025 respectively. To date, cVDPV2 was confirmed in 50 sewage water samples in 2025 (17 from Djibouti, 13 from Yemen, 12 from Somalia, 7 from occupied Palestinian territory, and 1 from Sudan).
