Highlights of the week
WildPoliovirus
▪ Three new WPV1 cases reported this week – two from Afghanistan and one from Pakistan. The two new WPV1 cases from Afghanistan are: one each from Uruzgan province (Khas Uruzgan district) and Hilmand province (Lashkargah district) with dates of onset on 20th October and 5 th November 2024, respectively. The index case from Khas Uruzgan was identified by a positive contact. The new WPV1 case from Pakistan is from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (DI Kan district) with date of onset on 6 th November 2024. The WPV1 case count in 2024 to date is 81 (25 from Afghanistan and 56 from Pakistan). In 2023, the count remains 12 (6 each from Afghanistan and Pakistan).
▪ Sixteen new WPV1 ES reported this week, all from Pakistan. The newly reported ES are: 9 from Sindh province (Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Larkana, Sukkur districts, KHIEast, KHIKorangi, KHIMalir, and KHISouth towns), 5 from Punjab province (4 from Lahore and 1 DG Khan districts), and one each from Balochistan province (Quetta district) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (Peshawar district) with samples collection dates between 5–12 November 2024. The ES count to date in 2024 is 607 (91 from Afghanistan and 516 from Pakistan). In 2023, the count remains 188 (62 from Afghanistan and 126 from Pakistan).
Vaccine derived poliovirus (VDPV)
▪ No new VDPV isolates reported this week. The cVDPV2 count in 2024 to date remains 39 (35 from Yemen, 3 from Somalia, and 1 from Occupied Palestinian Territory). In 2023, the count remains 16 (8 each from Somalia and Yemen), while the count of the cVDPV2 positives ES in 2024 to date remains 26 (11 from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, 7 from Yemen, 3 from Somalia, 2 each from Sudan and Egypt, and 1 from Djibouti). In 2023, the count remains 41 (16 from Yemen, 11 from Egypt, 9 from Somalia, and 5 from Sudan).
